Bring an End to the War in Iraq
Over 4,146 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq and more than 30,435 wounded, many crippled for life. It is estimated that over 100,000 additional American soldiers have returned with brain injuries, major depression, and PTSD. What if one of these was your son, daughter, husband, or wife? Also, before it is all over and all the long term medical, support, and rebuilding costs are incurred, the war in Iraq will cost Americans up to two trillion dollars. This huge cost could have helped solve many important unaddressed problems here in America. Is it worth this cost?
The war in Iraq was sold to us with inaccurate information. We have chased non-existent weapons of mass destruction instead of the terrorists responsible for killing 3,062 people on 9/11. We were told that this now 6 year old war costing trillions of dollars would only last 6 months and would be paid for by oil revenue. We are now being told that we should stay in Iraq by the same people who have made so many wrong predictions.
The sad truth is we were drawn into the middle of an ethnic civil war to act as policemen with an unclear end in sight. Unfortunately, we have diverted our resources from addressing the genuine threats from terrorism and created new threats from terrorism because of our intervention in Iraq.
Iraqi government leaders are calling for a withdrawal timeline of American forces. Iraqi Prime Minister Mouwaffak al-Rubaie has recently stated: "no foreign soldier remains in Iraq after a specific deadline, not an open time frame."
We should respect the wishes of the Iraqi government to take over responsibility for their future. Iraq has a long history of solving its problems and has the ability to do so now. As long as America assumes a major role, the Iraqi government has insufficient incentive to make the tough decisions to take responsibility for its own future. America should establish a responsible exit strategy consistent with the safety of our troops following the proper lines of withdrawal and executed by our commanders on the ground.
We need to bring an end to the war in Iraq and devote our resources directly to stopping terrorists and eliminating domestic 'sleeper cells'. We also need new leadership to ensure that this never happens again.
